A straight blade razor is a term used for a blade that can be folded back into it's handle. These days, most people are not familiar with a straight blade razor. Most people can often picture a scene, whether from a movie or TV show, where a barber gives a man a shave using a straight blade razor.
For most men, thinking about shaving with a straight blade razor is an intimidating thought. To most, these blades look dangerous and they don't want the blade anywhere near their neck. However, razors have been used for shaving for thousands of years before safety (disposable) razors or electric razors were ever invented.
So, why should you consider a straight blade razor when the local store is stocked with disposable razors?
- Nostalgia - some men just like the feeling of using a technique that has been around for generations. Also, it could be a tradition passed on from father to son.
- Closer shave - if you have a properly sharpened straight blade razor it will shave much closer than any disposable razor.
- Less irritation - men who suffer from "razor bumps" may find that using a straight blade razor will be a solution to their problem.
- More efficient shave - with the long blade (compared to disposable razors), it takes less swipes across the face to complete a full shave. Also, the straight blade razor does not have to be rinsed off as much as a disposable razor which has multiple blades that are very close together
- Longevity - a well maintained straight blade razor can practically last a lifetime. While the initial investment is more, a straight blade razor can be much cheaper than disposable razors over time.
